1795 OLD SHEFFIELD PLATE LONDON GADROON NEOCLASSIC TALL FOOTED CHAMPAGNE WINE COOLER ( GEORGE III BUST MARK)
The
term “Sheffield Plate” denotes a silver-plating technique in
which a base metal item and at least one strip of silver are melted
together and rolled into a sheet. This sheet is then hand-hammered
into the desired final shape. The outer layer of silver hides the
cheaper metal beneath, granting the appearance of solid silver at a
much-reduced cost. The
articles themselves derive their value from the many hours of hard
labor required to produce them, the practiced and skillful hand of
the silversmith, and the depth of knowledge he must possess.
Sheffield Plate, also called "Old Sheffield Plate," is so
named because of its discovery in Sheffield, England. For this
reason, and others, in the minds of many, that city has become
synonymous with silver-plating.
