Khmer Multi-Armed Male Deity ‘Harihara’ Pre-Angkor Period, ‘Sambor Prei-Kuk’ Style.

Title: Khmer Standing Figure of a Multi-arm Male Deity ‘Harihari’, Pre-Angkor Period 7-8th Century, Sambor Prei Kuk Style, Cambodia.

Overview: A superb Khmer Male Deity figure of ‘Hari-Hara’, stylistically and iconographically executed in traditional 'Sambor Prei Kuk' style, from Khmer mythology. The sandstone fragment, half Shiva and half Vishnu was once part of a sanctuary element composed of high relief, supported by a lintel at the back of the head. As with images from this period, the features and ornamentation reflects a perfect mastery of sculpting and fluidity, appearing delicate and refine with natural movement. The statue measures 24.50 inches (62.23cm) in height including the removable stand.

Overview: Harihara – the Khmer conception differentiated the two deities only in the partition of the headdress into a combined ‘jatamukuta-mitre’ and in the provision of half of a third eye on Shiva’s side. The popularity of this hybrid deity was largely confined to the seventh century in Cambodia.

Description: The statue is exceptional, displaying typical Indian movement of the torso with supple modeling, a sense of naturalism of anatomy and stance, masterfully modeled in realistic human form, standing with both legs broken, fashioned wearing a knee-length Chawng Khun wrap secured by a simple belt extended down the front of the garment.
XXX The elaborate headdress on the right belongs to Shiva with rows of looped hair arranged in overlapping ringlets, rising to a dome-shaped topknot, and on the left Vishnu is shown wearing an un-ornamented tall cylindrical mitre, both with hair curls extended down to the shoulders. Their ovoid face appears indigenous, typically Khmer, with a serene expression, incised almond-shaped eyes, connected eyebrows above a well-shaped broad nose, a wide mouth, and elongated ears uncovered.
XXX The modeling of the slightly muscular body appears to have been based on natural observation, typical of Sambor Prei Kuk’s style. Images of this period would have displayed the arms bent at the elbow, and hands with open-palms holding attributes, or with fingers pressed together in mudra.
