This book is written for students following BTEC, City & Guilds and RSA GNVQ

Information Technology courses at Intermediate level. The structure of the book is based upon that of the syllabus and covers the four mandatory units as specified by the National Council for Vocational Qualifications.

This is a broad subject touching on many aspects of information technology. To gain the award students will have to cover the four mandatory units, three core skills and two of four optional units.

In the book each unit is divided into four elements, or areas of study. Each element will detail what the student is to do in the performance criteria. The areas to be studied are stated in the range.

In each element, we have covered the underpinning knowledge required by the students to enable them to meet the Evidence Indicators specified. Students must read and refer to the syllabus to ensure that they keep in mind the material they must cover and the Evidence Indicators they must match. These specify the form of evidence that is required together with the minimum that students must produce to demonstrate their knowledge.

Within the text we have highlighted these Evidence Indicators and they are grouped together at the end of each element. Also within the book are various discussion points and activities that might be useful in assisting the student to apply the material.

This book is not intended to be used without the guidance and assistance of a teacher or tutor. We have not included detailed assessment activities within the book as these may depend upon the facilities and resources available to the student.

At the end of each unit we have included a unit end test, similar in style to those the student will face.
