The fourth issue in the American Painting Series, U.S. #1243 honors frontier artist Charles M. Russell and pictures his painting “Jerked Down.”

“The Cowboy Artist”
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Charles M. Russell first visited Montana when he was 16 years old. Montana quickly became his permanent home. Russell worked as a hunter and a cowboy, and for a time lived among the Blood Indians. He sketched in his spare time. 
 
In 1893, Russell gave up his cowboy lifestyle and began painting and sculpting full time. Russell’s work dramatically recalled his experiences in Montana and brought the Old West to life. Notably prolific, Russell created nearly 4,000 scenes during his career. Also a writer, his “Rawhide Rawlins” stories, published in popular magazines of the day, are among the finest of the period’s Western literature.
