Cordell Hull, the longest-tenured U.S. Secretary of State, is honored on U.S. #1235. Hull served for 11 years under President Franklin D. Roosevelt until 1944, when he retired in poor health. The stamp was issued in Carthage, Tennessee, where Hull lived for many years.

Hull was known for building agreements with other nations that built trade helping the U.S. recover from the Great Depression. As World War II was being fought, Hull began laying the groundwork for an international organization – greatly influencing the formation of the United Nations in 1945. For his efforts, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1945.
