King George V Coronation (Police) Medal, 1911

The medals, which were issued to the same man, are named, respectively, as follows:
P.C. R. MILES.
P.C. R. W. MILES.

Richard William Miles was born in Maidstone, Kent, on the 4th January 1877. He was the son of Richard Miles, a carter, and his wife, Elizabeth Martha, née Lee. He was baptised at St. John the Baptist Church, Thanet, on the 20th December 1889. In 1891 Richard William lived with his parents and four siblings at 43, Byron Road, Margate, Kent. At that time Richard William worked as an errand boy, his father was then working as a general labourer.

In late 1901 Richard William Miles married Edith Kate Bones. In 1902 Richard William Miles was serving as a Police Constable with the City of London Police. In 1902 he received King Edward VII’s Police Coronation Medal.

In 1911 Police Constable Miles and his wife, together with their five years’ old son, Arthur, lived at 44, Ossory Road, Old Kent Road, London. In 1911 Constable Miles of the City of London Police received King George V’s Police Coronation Medal.

In 1939 retired policeman Richard Miles lived with his wife at The Croft, Handville Green, Waltham, Kent. Richard William Miles is believed to have passed away in 1957.

The medals were part of a late friend's collection.
