For sale is my 1978 VW Westfalia Berlin camper van with the 2 litre fuel injected petrol engine and 3 speed automatic gearbox. Left hand drive because it started life in the USA before I imported it in 2012.  It had three owners in the US before I bought it and has a big file of service history which backs up the 187,000 miles.

It has been dry stored every winter since I got it, and all year round for the last few years.  Very solid underneath.

Brown plaid fabric seat material, these were re-upholstered by Mad Matz in 2014 and are in excellent condition.  The paint colour is Dakota Beige, an original VW colour from the 1970s.

Very good original condition including the very rare set of:
  • Westfalia "Punch and Judy" blue and yellow awning tent,
  • Westfalia storage box/stool, and
  • Westfalia removable table which clips to the dashboard in the cab.
Full original book pack including the service book which is stamped up to 98,304 miles in April 1984 before it ran out of pages but the invoices for subsequent services are in a file, VW owner's manual and a Volkswagen Campmobile booklet with instructions for the Westfalia camping equipment.  Plus a large file of invoices for services and parts right back to the day it was new.  I also have all the paperwork relating to the import from the US and registration with DVLA, and a build certificate from the VW factory museum.

Complete camping equipment of two burner gas hob, sink, cool box, rock and roll bed and fold-out table.  The coolbox does not work, it may be an electrical fix but it keeps stuff cold for a day or two with a couple of ice packs.  The folding roof tent canvas was replaced by the previous owner in 2011 and is still in very good condition.  LPG gas tank is fitted under the sliding door.

Two seat belts fitted to the rear bench seat.

Various jobs and parts have been done since I bought it, including:
  • full service when brought to the UK including brakes overhauled, and regular services since then,
  • replaced Bosch fuel injection pump in July 2023
  • new starter motor and battery
  • replaced upper torsion bars
  • replaced gearbox sump gasket and changed gearbox oil
  • replaced cab door window trims and scrapers
  • various fuel and brake pipes replaced
  • other window and door rubbers have also been replaced
It runs, steers, changes gear and stops very well as it has been well looked after by all of its owners but is now for sale as my family have grown up and the camper is no longer getting the regular use that it deserves.

Points that may need attention:
  • the fuel gauge has stopped working, which is a common fault.  I believe this is a fault with the sender in the fuel tank because I've had the gauge out of the dash and it works when a current is passed through,
  • the interior heating is not working, I think the blower in the engine bay works but there is a fault with the pipes up to the cab,
  • This camper has not been fully restored so is not perfect - I have preferred to keep it original plus careful updates in the areas that were needed to keep it reliable using genuine VW, Bosch and Hella parts rather than Chinese or Brazilian replicas.
I am hoping the asking price is a fair one given the originality and condition of the camper, plus the massive benefit of the original Westy awning, stool box and cab table.  These cannot be found, and if they can will sell for big money on their own.

The asking price includes the awning but if you don't want it, I'm happy to keep it and the price will be reduced.

I am happy to take any questions and you are very welcome to view the camper, it is located in Warrington.
