To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the publication of Frankenstein, The Royal Mint have issued a new commemorative Silver £2 coin.

Written by Mary Shelley, ‘Frankenstein’ or ‘The Modern Prometheus’ is a horror that has captured our imaginations since its publication. It is considered to be one of the best loved gothic novels of all time.

Struck in 925/1000 Sterling Silver

Struck by The Royal Mint in 925/1000 Sterling Silver with fine gold plate to an immaculate Proof finish, this £2 coin was designed by Thomas Docherty and features the words ‘Frankenstein’ in an electric gothic font, with ‘Bicentenary of Mary Shelley’s The Modern Prometheus’ around the edge.
The edge inscription reads 'A SPARK OF BEING', which are the words of Frankenstein in the novel when he creates the Monster. The obverse features the fifth portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark.

***Most limited Silver £2 of 2018 – Just 4,500 pieces***

But most importantly, this Silver £2 has been limited to just 4,500 pieces. That’s the lowest edition limit of any Silver £2 coin issued this year and 3,500 less than the equivalent Jane Austen £2 that is completely sold out at the Mint.
