History
“As the HP-67 and HP-97 had an embedded card
reader, Hewlett-Packard could not omit to give to its flagship, the HP 41C/CV/CX
family, a peripheral completing its continuous memory feature to backup and
restore its programs and data on an external device. Taking advantage of the 4
I/O ports of the 41x system architecture, Hewlett-Packard had the good idea to
provide a smart optional disposal, easy to plug in the HP-41, to save and
restore programs and data on small magnetic cards. The Card reader (and writer)
was born. Because the magnetic cards designed have a capacity of 224 bytes, the
Card reader keeps track of cards as they are read and prompts you for the next
card when necessary. A security feature is also provided to allow a program to
be run but not reviewed or altered through normal operations (protected media).
Eager to provide the best possible service to his HP-67 and HP-97 clients,
Hewlett-Packard included in its Card reader all the necessary instructions to ensure
the compatibility with the magnetic cards coming from the HP-67 and HP-97
calculators software library.”

Condition
The HP-41 Card reader presented in this auction
is in excellent cosmetic and working condition. I tested the Card reader by
setting flags 1 to 4 to ON and executing a WSTS instruction and, as expected, it required me
to insert a magnetic card for a writing operation. After that, I set flags 1 to
4 to OFF and read the card. After the card was inserted and processed, flags 1 to
4 recovered to ON as recorded on card.
Ö
The
card reader box is in pretty good shape,
Ö
The
rubber foot show minor wear,
Ö
the
latches maintaining the card reader to the HP-41x are perfectly operational
(often, one or both are broken at the level of the rotating axe),
Ö
the
wheel pulling the card (made of rubber and disaggregating after a time) has
been replaced in 2006 by a 2 round O rings (square ones exists too), thanks to
Mark Hoskins (waterhosko). I did not glue the rings to the axe, they will be
this way easily replaceable in the future if it becomes necessary,
Ö
no
scratch and no engraving,
Ö
the
magnetic cards wallet is in very good condition,
Ö
the
40 magnetic cards including one abrasive card are unused except the card 1 used
for tests purposes,
Ö
the
HP 82104A Card reader Owner’s Handbook with no page torn nor engraving (except
a phone number on page 1) is in good condition only; it would have been rated
as very good without this phone number and a SATTI company sticker on front
cover page,
Ö
the
HP 82104A Quick Reference Card is in excellent condition,
Ö
the
subscription form is in excellent condition.
NOTE regarding card reader and
magnetic medias:
- O rings are not forever; their
intrinsic characteristics evolve in the time, becoming dry for example;
consider the eventuality of changing them again in the future.
- When unused, oxidation may
appear during the time on card reader contacts in charge of card insertion
detection, avoiding the card reader motor to start; testing it one or two times
a year can mitigate this problem.
- Magnetic properties of a media
depend on media quality, storage environment condition and/or manipulations.
