Here is Minolta's FIRST Macro lens -- the Rokkor - QF 50mm f3.5.

It's not like any other lens that Minolta ever made.  Why?  One reason is because it came with TWO lens mounts.

The lens has a Leica L39 mount, so it will fit on any camera with a Leica screw-mount, but it was supplied with a Leica-to-Minolta SR adapter, so it will fit on any Minolta SLR camera as well.

Why would Minolta do this?  Were they just nuts?

No.  They knew the lens was a winner -- in fact it's the same optical formula that Minolta (and now Sony) used for all their 50mm f3.5 Macro lenses.  Minolta wanted to make this lens usable on any other camera -- not just Minolta cameras.  By providing the lens with a Leica thread, this Macro lens can be used on any camera with interchangeable lenses -- film or digital -- with a simple Leica adapter (ONLY the Leica-to-Minolta adapter is included here).  And, if you want to use this lens on a Minolta camera, a Leica to Minolta adapter was included (see photos).

This was Minolta's first macro lens -- 1961. It is a pre-set style, which necessitates two f-stop rings.  One is the f-stop you want to use for the exposure, and the second is used to open and close the aperture quickly -- to compose, stop-down, and then expose.

The lens alone, focuses from infinity down to 1/2 life-size -- much closer than a typical 50mm lens.  But this lens comes with a 1:1 extension tube that allows the lens to focus to life-size -- 1X.

Consequently, unlike other macro lenses, this lens had two f-stop scales. The first (from f3.5-22) is on the top of the lens for normal use -- infinity to 1/2 life-size. The second, which runs from f4.8-32 is used when the 1:1 extension tube is attached -- see photo #4.

In addition, the lens has a handy magnification scale and a unique exposure compensation system -- see photo #5. After focusing and determining the magnification using the yellow lines, the f-stop ring is manually adjusted according to the built-in scale. It's very handy, and easy to use, and unique to this lens.  (Of course, if you are using this lens with a camera having automatic exposure control, the camera sets the shutter speed automatically.)
