On the obverse of the 2 euro coin is a fragment of a mosaic found in Sparta (3rd century BC), depicting a scene from a Greek myth: Zeus, who has turned into a bull, kidnaps the beautiful Europa, after whom a part of the world was named. To the upper left of the image is the inscription “ΕYPΩPN” (Europe (Greek)).Number 2 is not centered.
Also on the coins are the engraver's symbol of the Greek mint (letters ΓΣ) and the Greek MD mark. The outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European Union.
