SCARCE OPERATER‘S ORIGINAL PHOTO.   Very beautiful badge with a silver center and gold highlights.  Artillery observer badges were first instituted in 1895 as a crossed telescope design, which evolved with the instrument used, making the one here a 3rd generation badge. Known as 砲兵観測徽章 (Hōhei Kansoku Kishō) in Japanese, the badge was awarded to Japanese soldiers who demonstrated proficiency in artillery observation during their military service. It signified their ability to effectively observe and report on enemy movements, terrain conditions, and other relevant information on the battlefield.  The photo is very rare and shows the artillery observer with his coincidence range finder. This particular range finder was known as; 九一式対空測遠器眼鏡 (Kyuu Ichi-shiki Taikuu Sokuen-ki Gankyou) - Type 91 Surface-to-air Long-range Spectacles.

****** The Latch eyelet on the back is broken.
