La Sony Cyber-shot HX5, ricca di funzionalità, è dotata di un sensore CMOS Exmor R retroilluminato da 10 MP, obiettivo da 25-250 mm e offre registrazione di filmati AVCHD 1080i Full HD, stabilizzazione dell'immagine e panorama in movimento intelligente. L'HX5 è inoltre dotato di GPS e bussola integrati. Esternamente, la Cyber-shot DSC-HX5 è simile alla H55, ma le poche differenze tra i due modelli sono piuttosto importanti.
Sebbene l'ampiezza dell'obiettivo sia la stessa, ovvero 25-250 mm in entrambi i modelli, non condividono il sensore. Il sensore dell'HX5 ha una risoluzione inferiore rispetto all'H55, con 10 anziché 14 milioni di pixel, ma è EXMOR-R, un tipo CMOS retroilluminato, progettato per essere più sensibile in condizioni di scarsa illuminazione rispetto a un imager convenzionale di piccolo formato. Comprende anche una potente modalità video e offre la registrazione video HD 1080p, nel formato AVCHD. L'HX5 aggiunge anche un ricevitore GPS e un magnetometro integrati (o in parole povere: una bussola). Altre caratteristiche includono il sistema di stabilizzazione ottica Super SteadyShot di Sony e le stesse modalità Smile Shutter e rilevamento degli occhi chiusi che si trovano sull'H55.
