A family run business for over 115 years Beginning as a specialist retailer of bird seeds, we have expanded our product range over the years and now offer a comprehensive selection of animal feeds, wild bird foods, dog treats, garden supplies and fishing products. Maltbys' Stores is a pet and garden supplies retailer based in Hull, UK. Since opening in 1904, we have always aimed to provide our customers with the best quality products we can find. Now in our sixth family generation, we are still continuing to look for new ways to provide fantastic products to you and your pets. We know your animal's needs are very important, which is why we continue to work with our suppliers to find the freshest and best quality products available. At Maltbys' Stores we understand that feeding wild birds is a highly rewarding and entertaining pastime. What's more, with many of our treasured song and garden bird species now sadly in decline, feeding wild birds is more vital than ever in aiding conservation efforts. We sell a comprehensive range of wild bird feeders and wooden feeder boxes. Our bird feeders are available in a choice of three styles: Flip Top, Green Metal, and Hammertone. All of our hanging feeders can be hung from perches or feeding stations, or from more natural positions such as tree branches. See the descriptions of each type to decide which feeder would be best for you. Our Flip Top feeders are made of a durable green plastic with powder-coated carbon wire. Their flip top lids make them easy to fill: simply flip the lid open, put in the seed or feed that you are using, and then clip the lid closed again. Our Green Metal feeders are made of heavy duty cast metal, with either tough steel mesh, metal cage, or polycarbonate tubing depending on the style. To fill, flip up and pivot the lid, then flip back into place when finished. The green colour of the metal means they blend nicely into the colours of a garden, and their cast metal base and lid makes them extremely durable and able to withstand harsh weather. Our Hammertone feeders are made from a hammered-effect heavy duty cast lid and base, with either tough steel mesh, metal cage or polycarbonate casing. Like our Green Metal feeders they are designed to withstand the elements, and are also filled via a lift-and-pivot lid. The grey hammered metal effect means that this range will provide a stylish and modern touch to your garden, but will still attract a wide range of birds. Bird feeders can be hung in a number of locations, however it is best to be mindful that birds needs somewhere safe if they are going to settle and eat. We would recommend hanging your feeders at least 5 feet (1.5m) from the ground, and preferably away from fences or hedges where cats or other predators might be hiding. A nearby water source, such as a bird bath or a shallow container of fresh water, can also help attract birds to your feeders. And we would always recommend putting them in view of a window - that way you can enjoy watching any feathered friends who visit your garden! When using bird feeders or feeding stations, there is a marginally increased risk of birds spreading diseases. We recommend cleaning and disinfecting your bird feeders regularly to minimise the risk of infection, preferably every 2 weeks. To clean your feeders, you should first dispose of any remaining feed inside, as this cannot be reused. Wearing rubber gloves, thoroughly clean your feeder in hot soapy water, then rinse under an outside tap and leave to dry completely before reusing. For extra protection, spray your feeder with a veterinary disinfectant, rinse and dry again before use. You will find your bird feeders empty more quickly or slowly depending on a number of factors, including what time of year it is, which birds are common in your area, and whether or not other people locally are also putting out wild bird food. Ideally you should refill your bird feeders as soon as they are empty, as wild birds learn where safe food sources are and return to them when they next need to feed. Be particularly mindful during cold months that your feeders may empty more quickly, as birds rely on feeders when other food sources are unavailable. Many people who use wild bird feeders experience persistent problems with squirrels and other rodents being attracted to the food, often scaring away any birds you are hoping to attract. This can be a very hard problem to overcome, as squirrels are known for being particularly persistent and can launch themselves long distances from trees or other vantage points. If possible, try to position your feeder at least 5 feet from the ground and at least 10-15 feet from any trees or fences. Pole-mounted feeders can also offer more protection than those hanging from tables or trees. By providing a range of wild bird foods, either in feeders, on tables or on the ground, you can attract a huge range of wild bird species to your garden and give our feathered friends the nutrition they need Product Description
