Around 150 years of Impressionism with the Musée d'Orsay - 12 stamps

150 years ago, on April 15, 1874, opened the first impressionist exhibition in Paris.
“Affamed of independence”, Monet, Renoir, Morisot, Degas or Pissarro, Sisley, Cézanne decided to break the rules by organizing their own exhibition, outside the official routes: Impressionism was born.

In the spring of 2024, the Musée d'Orsay will celebrate this anniversary with the exhibition "Paris 1874. Inventing Impressionism, including some 130 works, including masterpieces of this movement. With the largest impressionist collection in the world, the Musée d'Orsay will make this anniversary a national event, also lending nearly 180 major works to some 30 museums across France.

La Poste joins this anniversary by issuing a booklet of 12 stamps entitled “Around 150 Years of Impressionism with the Musée d’Orsay”, illustrating works characteristic of Impressionism at its peak – or reflecting its premises, or its so-called “post-impressionist” extensions – thus reflecting the extraordinary richness of this fundamental artistic current.

All the works selected belong to the collection of the Musée d'Orsay; they will, for some, be included in the exhibition "Paris 1874. Inventing Impressionism", while others will soon be lent to museums in our regions. Celebrating the 150 years of Impressionism, this stamp notebook will allow the works that illustrate it to travel throughout France on letters, just as the works will travel in the region.
