Offered here is a Giant Sewing Needle in the Original Presentation Case . It is engineered from stainless steel and I guess it’s a one off piece , made specially as a presentation item .
I guesstimate it dates to the 1960s .
It was given as a long service retirement gift to an employee from The Burton Group ( Leeds ) . They were obviously Male tailors / clothiers based in Leeds .
I believe the person who this was presented too was an Engineer who worked for the group .
The presentation plaque is in good quality brass and reads
“ Presented to Morris Brough FACME FAFC on the occasion of his retirement after 33 years service with the Burton Group .
This comes in its original Perspex Case , this is bordered in chrome edging ( one of the chrome pieces is missing and has been replaced with tape ) . There is some wear to the case . The plastic cover is hinged , and there is a well engineered screw that fastens it down .
The case is on a wooden base which is covered in green felt .
The entire case measures 34 x 5 x 4 inches .
The sewing needle is incredibly well made with a tapered body , and with an eye at the top of the needle ,and it is superbly engineered .
The needle measures 30.5 inches , it is tapered and is 1.25 inches at its widest.
The plaque is made from Brass and is engraved , but it has a dark patina so is not distinguishable in my photos, but it is easily read when you have the item in front of you .
The entire piece is very heavy.
Hopefully this will finish up in a Museum or in a serious collection .
Good Luck .
