Walt Disney Studio Archives 1942 2003 WWII War Insignia Hank Porter Coast Guard

Classic Walt Disney Studio Treasures from Saturday's Toys presents...    a unique lot of four (4) World War II facsimile items as recreated by the Walt Disney Studios / Walt Disney Archives in 2003.

Includes:

  • Dec. 29, 1942 correspondence received by Walt Disney from the commanding officer of a Coast Guard sub-chaser (front & back; no signature referenced; on USCG stationery); 7" x 10.25"; written from the St. George Depot, Staten Island, NY
  • Corresponding pencil sketch of a recommended WWII insignia; 7" x 10.25"
  • Final color sample of insignia created by Walt Disney artist, Hank Porter (unsigned); folded at center; 6.5" x 8"
  • Mini-poster promoting fuel conservation:  "Planes Need Gasoline - Share Your Car For Your Country"; folded at center; approx. 9.25" x 11.75"; featuring Mickey Mouse, Goofy and Donald Duck as they hitch a ride to work.

The letter from the commanding officer mentions that perhaps one of Disney's animated characters might be used instead of the octopus... but Porter opted to use a fish riding a seahorse for the insignia.  Includes the date of receipt at the Disney Studio (upper right corner); and the word "Hank" inscribed in pencil (an obvious reference that directs the request to Hank Porter, the studio's assigned artist for all such insignia requests.

These authorized reproductions were created in 2003 exclusively for Disney and are unlikely to reproduced again any time soon.  To own the originals of these archival documents would cost hundreds of dollars; but they are available at a fraction of the price through these facsimile artifacts.  All items marked "Facsimile Disney"

All items suitable for framing; an affordable means of collecting the historic treasures of the Walt Disney Studio.

Saturday’s Toys and Collectibles was founded in 1994 by Southern California author and media historian, Dave Mason. Soon after eBay's launch the following year, Saturday's Toys was among the first online specialists to strategize in embracing this rapidly developing technology. Having delivered over 15,000 coveted treasures since that time, Saturday's Toys is pleased to partner with researchers and collectors throughout the globe.

Today, online offerings of archival keepsakes are presented in celebration of the times that allow for family, friends and neighbors to join in memorable gatherings that nurture the strong connections that bind a community together. These treasures are affectionately represented by "Saturday's Toys." In that light we present our adopted motto (with a nod to the Sherman Brothers): "Oh, let's go fly a kite!"
