French Red Cross - 2023

The French Red Cross "acts to protect and rehabilitate people in a vulnerable situation unconditionally and build, with them, their resilience". That is our raison d’être, our driving force, which guides our actions and makes tangible our founding principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, volunteerism, unity and universality.

Faced with the proliferation and diversification of crises, in the face of uncertainty, we are all vulnerable. In this way, we must learn to better anticipate and prepare ourselves together, but also to adapt to better rebound in the face of difficulties. Self-help and social bonding are crucial for action and building the resilience of individuals and populations.

A member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, an association of general interest and a platform for social innovation, the French Red Cross draws its strength from a network of more than 1,000 voluntary establishments and more than 800 institutions to act as close as possible to the population. It acts on several areas of intervention: international action, within the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which for 160 years has federated 192 national societies; vocational training; the management of health, social and medico-social institutions; and social action and relief. This last part was one of the founding pillars of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement by Henry Dunant more than a century ago.

Designating all relief and assistance missions to persons at risk, first aid to the French Red Cross is: a settlement in all the departments of the territory, a demand for its level of training, important logistical and human resources, as well as reinforcement of public relief. In 2022, there were as many as 8,500 rescue workers and 9,157 rescue workers, as well as 7,069 prompt relief operations and 14,466 interventions. Accredited civil security, the French Red Cross also contributes, throughout the year, to the coverage of consumer events by setting up forecasting relief arrangements (DPS). As a result, 12,467 relief stations were provided in 2022 by first-aid volunteers, almost all of whom were volunteers, whose main tasks were to protect, rescue and alert.

Committing to the French Red Cross in this emblematic activity and wearing uniforms is above all a human adventure, but it is also to highlight the values of humanity, neutrality, volunteerism and unity.

The partners in the post office and the French Red Cross since 1914

Since 2006, more than EUR 27 million have been donated by La Poste to the French Red Cross to finance many international, national or local activities in the field of health, humanitarian and social action.

The return of this surcharge has contributed to the implementation of numerous French Red Cross projects in various fields of activity, including:

- The rise of first aid actions, either through the creation of first aid activity proper (as in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) or by the modernization of equipment (in Lens for example), but also to allow the French Red Cross network to renew its equipment and renovate its premises for training in the gestures that save

- The deployment of mobile devices throughout France with Red Cross on Wheels, a multi-service structure in front of precarious audiences who cannot afford to travel in the association’s fixed units.

- The development of hygiene-related support schemes, which is so important for self-esteem. For example, solidarity laundry (which aims to provide people in vulnerable situations free of charge or they will be able to wash their clothes) or the Solidouches project (which allows precarious audiences to access hygiene) also allow people accompanied to find a friendly reception, listening and guidance area.

- The creation of Halte Respray Alzheimer's Retente spaces in Normandy and Hérault. These non-medical hostels offer activities suitable for people with Alzheimer’s disease and allow carers to take time for them. A temporary takeover focused on listening and sharing, to maintain a social bond unfortunately too often altered by the disease and to break the exclusive face-to-face between the carer and the helper.

- The improvement of reception and activity conditions in many local units of the French Red Cross, for example the food aid unit of the Epinal, Montauban or vestiboutics of Pontarlier, Mayotte, Quimper, Caux Valley of the Seine branch, etc.

- The establishment of transport adapted to the elderly and to the residents of French Red Cross structures, in order to promote their autonomy and maintain the social link, for example in the Tours region or in the Yvelines.

All the projects implemented by the French Red Cross are presented on the official website www.croix-rouge.fr.

The French Red Cross and the Groupe La Poste have been working together to create philatelic products since 1914.
