The PANAME Module belongs to the category of extremely
rare modules (like ZENROM, PPC, HEPAX, …). It is a hard-to-find 8k module only produced
at less than 250 pieces. Collectors know perfectly what we are talking about
and, believe me, I am starting the auction at a sweet price.
History
“The famous PANAME Module was created by
Jean-Jacques Dhénin and Stéphane Barizien between 1983 and 1984. Its ‘marketing’
began at the end of 1984. While the ZENROM module was released in May 1984
(PPC, V11 N4) and the ADVANTAGE module was presented in November 1985 (PPC, V12
N11), the PANAME Module was part of the logic of artisanal development and
arrived on the market a little late. It was presented in March 1986 in an issue
of DATAFILE (HPCC, V5 N2).
In the excitement that reigns in 1983 around
the small world of programmable calculator enthusiasts, a group of amateurs,
future engineers and doctors, designed and developed the project which had its
origins in the publication of the book by Philippe Descamps and Jean-Jacques
Dhénin: ‘Programmer HP 41’ (editions du P.S.I., 1982). Indeed, most of the
functions are studied in the book, and the authors provide the listings. Thus,
the preface written by Philippe Descamps mentions that ‘almost all of the
functions contained in the PANAME Module were designed as independent
procedures, initially written in user language and published in 1982’.
The transition from the HP 41 user language to
the machine language in microcode requires two things: on the one hand, mastery
of the microcode (and therefore having the source codes of the HP 41), and on
the other hand, mastery of an MLDL (Machine Language Development) like ERAMCO.
However, Stéphane Barizien, who was at the time a student at the famous École
Centrale de Paris, had such a system. His skills will be implemented
successfully. Jean-Jacques Dhénin ensures the transition between the functions
described in the work and their concrete achievements.
The question of financing the module was also raised,
and it was Etienne Poupée from the SCIP (Société de Câblage et d'Informatique
Portable) who participated in the project by helping to finance it. Another
company, BCMW, for which Jean-Jacques Dhénin worked, was interested in the
module through the development of a portable system capable of managing stocks
for the Suchard company (renowned for its chocolate!).
‘It was Stéphane Barisien who created the
program to feed assembly code into the ‘ROM-making machine’ in Orsay, because
at the time HP had not planned to create ROMs in assembler but only in user
language.’ Etienne Poupée said.”
