SASS EMPORIA are delighted to offer this large handmade earthenware vase produced by Sgrafo Modern of Germany. Sgrafo are highly regarded as a niche German producer of mid-century modern styled art ceramics and porcelain. Their studio was founded by Peter and Klaus Muller, who both were incredibly important in the development of a layered technique of porcelain making. An innovation from the 1950's and 60's where Muller was able to inscribe geometric patterns into differing coloured layers of porcelain that revealed a simple but effective decoration which came to be known as Sgrafo.
This example however is a later piece, likely to be from the 1970's, at a time where Sgrafo created a range of unglazed handmade earthenware ceramics that are often likened to the quality and aesthetic of Danish Pottery. A substantially weighted cannister shaped vessel with a wide opening brim features a rough sandstone finish with a vertical linear scratched texture where its exterior is hand-painted in stripes of blue, cream and brown. Executed on the potters wheel and hand-inscribed to its base '3197 Sgrafo' this is a unique offering where it carries the quality hallmarks that work by Peter Muller has become famous for!
