Lewis & Clark Expedition 1st ed Travels Missouri Sioux INDIANS
Americana
The Lewis and Clark Expedition, the most famous Americana expansion
voyage, was recorded in journals and printed for the public to know just how
impressive this journey was. This 1809, first appearance of the contents of the
Lewis and Clark journals, is
“the best work we have on the countries
described, and its republications would be an acceptable service.”
(Sabin)
‘Literature of Lewis and Clark’ says of this edition:
“the first in a long and mostly related
series of unauthorized published accounts of the expedition.”
Field’s report on this work, however, is the most thorough.
“it possesses much interest, as it contains
some documents not published in any other edition. Among them are a description
of the manners and customs of the Missouri Indians; a statistical view of the
Northwester tribes; historical sketches of several Indian tribes of Louisiana;
observations on the voyage of William Dunbar and Dr. Hunter extracted from
their journals, and a vocabulary of the languages of some of the tribes of
Indians.
This 1809 Longman edition was published in London and, according to
Howes, is a ‘counterfeit’ edition. However, Sabin notes that it contains
information not found in other editions.
