AMERICAN HERO STORIES - Eva March Tappan, FE Schoonover, illus. (1926 Hardcover)

American Hero Stories, originally published in 1906, contains five accounts of voyages and explorers, ranging from Columbus to Lewis and Clark; stories of five colonies of marked dissimilarity – Virginia, Quebec, Plymount, New York, and Philadelphia; brief lives of four pioneers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; fifteen short stories of war time; and a sketch of Teddy Roosevelt’s career. This 1926 edition adds biographical sketches of Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee, plus the story of the first airplane flight to circle the globe by a crew of U.S. Army pilots in 1924. In case you are wondering, it took 15 days, 5 hours and 7 minutes.

The chapters are arranged in chronological order, with a thread of continuity running through them. The aim of the book is to introduce in informal and friendly fashion some of the makers of American history, and to provide a simple, broad foundation for future study of history and biography. Includes 4 color plate illustrations by Frank E. Schoonover.
