Los Seis Libros de Galatea. Escrita por Miguel de Cervantes. Tomo I. Madrid: Don Antonio de Sancha, 1784.

[together with]

Trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda, Historia Setentrional Por Miguel de Cervantes [...]. Tomo II. Madrid: Don Antonio de Sancha, 1802.

-------------------

Volume one only of the first title, and volume two only of the second title, but here brought together and uniformly bound in full marbled calf.

The Galatia volume is considered to be the best edition of the work in the 18th century, it responds to Antonio de Sancha's project to publish a collection of Cervantes' works and is dedicated by the printer to the Count of Floridablanca. The illustrations are by José Ximeno and the typography corresponds to the printer's usual quality

Cervantes himself considered Trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda to be his greatest work, though critics unanimously agree that belongs to Don Quixote. It was finished just three days before Cervantes' death and published posthumously.

Uniform contemporary full marbled calf, both retaining their original tooled red morocco labels. The bindings are contemporary to the publication of the later of the two volumes, circa before 1810. Bindings rubbed, minor losses at extremities, joints rubbed, but with all boards securely attached, the bindings firm, and without shelf lean. Top page edges uniformly dulled else edges are very good. No attached bookplates, some pencil notes to endpapers from previous booksellers. A few areas of pencil marginalia to some leaves throughout. Generally very clean throughout, final few leaves in the Galatia volume with some dampstaining, discoloured at edges, without loss of sense to text. Text blocks mildly toned as typical.
