Popils are used during celebrations, whether at various stages of life, particularly during weddings, 

at the consecration of a pagoda or a statue of the Buddha. The assistance turns the Popils: 

everyone forms a circle around the object or person to be honored. 

The popil, with his lit candle, 

passes from left hand to left hand until it has completed a certain number of turns. 

The people who spin the popil are ten in number, five women and five men. 

They must be married people and of good moral character.
