Over the course of his long and distinguished career in first-class cricket, Lancashire’s John Tommy Tyldesley, gained a reputation as one of the best batsmen of his generation on rain-affected pitches. And the featured match, between Lancashire and the Australians at Old Trafford in 1899, perfectly illustrates this. On a wicket that was ‘playing queerly’, Tyldesley scored 56 and 42 while his teammates could only muster 58 runs between them in Lancashire’s two completed innings. The book also briefly recalls Tyldesley’s famous Ashes innings of 62 on a “sticky dog” at Melbourne in 1903-04, and a less well-known innings of 77 on a “glue-pot” against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in 1910.
