The Dassault Mirage 2000 is a French multirole, single-engine fourth-generation jet fighter manufactured by Dassault Aviation. It was designed in the late 1970s as a lightweight fighter to replace the Mirage III for the French Air and Space Force (Armée de l'air et de l'espace). The Mirage 2000 evolved into a multirole aircraft with several variants developed, with sales to a number of nations. It was later developed into the Mirage 2000N and 2000D strike variants, the improved Mirage 2000-5 and several export variants. Over 600 aircraft were built and it has been in service with nine nations.  The Mirage 2000N is a dedicated nuclear strike variant which was intended to carry the Air-Sol Moyenne Portée (ASMP) nuclear stand-off missile. Flight tests of the first of two prototypes, Mirage 2000N 01 (the eighth Mirage 2000) began on 3 February 1983. During the 65-minute flight, the aircraft reached a speed of Mach 1.5.[12] The variant entered operational service in 1988, initially operating from Luxeil Air Base with 4e Escadre de Chasse.[13] Closely derived from the Mirage 2000N is a dedicated conventional attack variant designated Mirage 2000D. Initial flight of the Mirage 2000D prototype, a modified Mirage 2000N prototype, was on 19 February 1991. The first flight of a production aircraft occurred 31 March 1993, and service introduction followed in April 1995. A total of 75 and 86 Mirage 2000Ns and Mirage 2000Ds were manufactured, respectively. By the late 1980s, the Mirage 2000 was beginning to age compared with the latest models of F-16 fighters. In particular, attention was drawn to the aircraft's inability to engage multiple target simultaneously and the small load of air-to-air missiles it could carry. Consequently, Dassault in April 1989 announced that it (with the cooperation of Thomson-CSF) would be working on a privately funded update of the Mirage 2000C which was to be named the Mirage 2000-5.[14][15] A two-seat Mirage 2000B prototype was extensively modified as the first Mirage 2000-5 prototype, and it first flew on 24 October 1990. A Mirage 2000C prototype was also reworked to a similar standard, making its initial flight on 27 April 1991. The first front-line aircraft variant to have been designed specifically in response to the export market, Taiwan was the first country to order the type in 1992, followed by Qatar in 1994. The type was first delivered in 1996 and entered service in 1997.[16] Domestically, Dassault needed an order from the AdA to help promote foreign sales and, in 1993, the AdA decided to upgrade 37 of their existing Mirage 2000s to the 2000-5 specification as a stopgap before the arrival of the Rafale in AdA service. The upgraded aircraft were redesignated Mirage 2000-5F, and became operational in 2000. They retained the old countermeasures system with the Serval/Sabre/Spirale units and did not receive the ICMS 2 system. A two-seat version was developed as well, whose rear seat has a HUD but not an associated head-level display and lacks a built-in cannon, although cannon pods can be carried.[citation needed] At the urging of the United Arab Emirates, Dassault worked on a further modification of the Mirage 2000-5. Initially dubbed Mirage 2000-9, this variant saw the upgrade of the radar and the associated avionics, the change of weapons configuration, and the extension of range. The last Mirage 2000 was delivered on 23 November 2007 to the Hellenic Air Force;[17] afterwards, the production line was shut down.  First commissioned in April 1988 within the strategic air forces, the Mirage 2000N specialized in nuclear deterrence for thirty years. The bomber was equipped with the ASMP missile, followed by the ASMPA (improved air-to-surface medium-range missile), and was used in addition for a number of conventional missions during operations abroad.)

L’escadron de chasse 1/5 "Vendée" est constitué des escadrilles SPA 26 " CIGOGNE " et SPA 124 " JEANNE D’ARC " créées au cours de la Première Guerre mondiale. Après s’être de nouveau illustrées durant la campagne de France en 1940 sur Bloch 152 puis sur Dewoitine 520, elles ont été regroupées en Afrique du Nord et dissoutes en 1943. Le 1er août 1944, toujours en Afrique du Nord, sur le terrain de Reghaia, elles sont recréées et réunies, formant ainsi le groupe de chasse 2/6 " TRAVAIL " équipé de P39 Airacobra. Le 14 décembre de la même année a lieu le retour sur le terrain de Vallon en France et c’est le 7 avril 1945 que le groupe s’établit à Nice pour assurer des missions d’appui aérien sur le Front des Alpes au profit de la 1ère DFL. Le 18 juin 1945, le groupe, alors basé à Salon-de-Provence, participe au défilé aérien de la victoire à Paris et se voit, en juillet, entièrement équipé de nouveaux avions américains : P63 " King Cobra ". En avril 1946, le groupe fait mouvement vers Bizerte et un an plus tard, prend l’appellation de groupe de chasse 1/5 " TRAVAIL ". Il constitue alors, avec le 4/2 " ILE DE FRANCE " stationné à Reghia, la 5ème escadre. Le 3 avril 1949, le groupe de chasse 1/5 " TRAVAIL " devient 1/5 " VENDEE ". Il est toujours équipé de P63 " King Cobra ". En juin 1949, il est désigné pour partir en Extrême-Orient et fait campagne au Tonkin du 1er août 1949 au 1er août 1950. Au cours de la campagne d’Indochine où il a accompli 2 990 missions de guerre en 3 704 heures de vol, le groupe est cité deux fois à l’ordre de l’armée. En 1950, de retour en métropole, le groupe de chasse 1/5 est doté de son premier avion à réaction, le " Vampire ". Le groupe, affecté à Orange, prend définitivement l’appellation d’escadron de chasse 1/5 " VENDEE ". En janvier 1957 le " VENDEE " se transforme sur " Mystère II ". En janvier 1958, les pilotes font connaissance avec le " Mystère IV ", que l’escadron utilisera jusqu’en janvier 1961, avant de passer sur " Super Mystère B2 ". En juillet 1966, l’escadron est transformé sur " Mirage IIIC ". Pendant 8 ans et 8 mois les pilotes accomplissent 26 138 heures de vol sur ce type d’appareil. Le 15 mars 1975, le " Mirage IIIC " laisse sa place au " Mirage F1C ". A partir de juillet 1977, avec l’apparition des premiers " Mirage F1C-200" ravitaillables en vol, commencent des missions de plus en plus longues et en janvier 1980 le premier raid de " Mirage F1 " sur Djibouti est réalisé. En août 1983, l’escadron vit son premier détachement au Tchad dans le cadre de la Force d’Action Extérieure (FAE). Au cours de l’opération " MANTA ", 300 missions ont été effectuées au départ de N’djamena. Depuis le 1er septembre 1988, l’escadron est officiellement doté du " Mirage 2000 RDI " qui donne pour la première fois la possibilité à un avion de chasse de détecter et de détruire un appareil hostile quelle que soit son altitude. L’escadron célèbre dès le 27 novembre 1991 le franchissement du cap des 10 000 heures de vol effectuées sur Mirage 2000 RDI. Le " VENDEE " a pour mission de veiller au respect de la souveraineté nationale dans l’espace aérien du sud-est de la France et sur la façade méditerranéenne. Il peut intervenir à longue distance. Ainsi en 1990-91, il participe, à partir de la base d’Al Ahsa en Arabie Saoudite, à l’opération " DAGUET " qui, dans le cadre du " DESERT STORM ", aboutit à la libération du Koweit. Aujourd’hui, les appareils sont régulièrement détachés en Italie dans le cadre de l’opération " SALAMANDRE ", composante française de l’opération " DELIBERATE FORCE ".
