The 4th Australian Light Horse Regiment was raised in 1914 as the divisional regiment of the 1st Aust Division.in early 1916,'B' and later 'D' Squadron formed the 2nd Anzac Mounted Regiment in france.the third squadron of this unit being provided dy the Otago Mounted Rifles(NZ).Both regiments retained the same patch untill the 4th Light Horse Regiment in Egypt was brought up to strenth and alloted to 4th Light Horse Brigade in February 1917 at  this time a new patch was issued
