Properties
Alliin - alliin include several different compounds and once chopped or crushed these are converted to allicin. Alliin has been shown to have antibiotic, antimycotic (anti fungal) and cholesterol and triglyceride (blood fat) lowering effects.
Allicin - stimulates natural killer cells, which fight bacteria and viruses. It promotes an increase in levels of the antioxidant glutathione, stimulating cellular function and reducing premature aging.
Ajoene - derived from allicin, ajoene interferes with the mechanism that causes platelets to aggregate and causes blood clots to dissipate.
Contra-indication/Precautions
A very small number of people have been known to exhibit hypersensitivity to garlic products. People taking blood thinners should consult their doctor before taking garlic supplements as it may increase clotting times. Diabetics should note garlic increases free insulin levels by inhibiting its breakdown.
