 You have to be extremely lucky to get the end of a pen blank exactly square by cutting and sanding alone, and you wont see the minor fault until you have assembled the pen, then that thousandths of an inch out of square will look very noticeable, but at that stage its too late to do anything about it. After you have used one of these you will wonder how you ever managed before. These pen blank trimming tools are the choice of most professional woodturners and save time and money in the long run. 

How to use:

After you have drilled the pen blank and glued the brass tubes in place (and the glue has set), use the Pen blank trimming tool (also called a barrel trimmer) to square off all the 4 ends of the pen blank. The trimming tool can be mounted in a chuck on the lathe, this is just to hold the tool (don't turn the power on) or do as I have done and make a simple wooden handle for the trimming tool and use it a bit like you would a pencil sharpener. Hold the blank in your hand - pop the trimmer in the tube and rotate the trimmer clockwise. It only takes a few short turns to square the ends of your pen blank.
