NATALIA VODIANOVA and  JOHNNY BORRELL on the cover.

With Razorlight frontman, JOHNNY BORRELL, on the cover making history as the seventh man to have taken fashions's top spot (alongside NATALIA VODIANOVA who was expecting her third child at the time of going to press), the May issue pays tribute to "some of our favourite men", says editor Alexandra Shulman. "BORRELL, artist ANTONY GORMLEY and entrepreneur and social maelstrom BEN ELLIOT."

Summer's new erogenous zone? The clavicle. Softly sculpted blouses and coquettish dresses have a sultry, slipped-off-the-shoulder sexiness – Marc Jacobs, Kenzo, Michael Kors, Alessandro Dell'Acqua, YSL and Valentino are all employed to prove the point.

Actresses are still making the grade as house models: DIANE KRUGER for Chanel, NICOLE KIDMAN for Omega, LINDSAY LOHAN for MiuMiu, UMA THURMAN for Tag Heuer and CHARLIZE THERON for Dior (not forgetting ALEXANDER MCQUEEN striding out of the sea fully dressed for the ads for his new line of Samsonite luggage), while Christopher Kane's elastic and Swarovski crystal mini dress, £3,750 to order at Browns, is teamed with Chanel diamanté leather platforms and a Swarovski bag and necklace (from Aquascutum), for the dazzling party look of the season.

THOMAS HEATHERWICK is hailed as a unique figure in British design and ANTONY GORMLEY "the king of British public art", while, "with his exquisite use of proportion, the influential bell-epoque couturier PAUL POIRET" is credited with being well ahead of his time. "That time is now," says Judith Watt, as she profiles the fashion genius ahead of the opening of the Poiret: King of Fashion exhibition due to open at the Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute on May 9.

NATALIA VODIANOVA is this issue's Stylefile wearing a granddad-style shirt from What Goes Around Comes Around, a shrunken CK Jeans jacket, ankle boots from the first Marc Jacobs show she starred in and high-waisted Dior Homme jeans. "My husband tried them, but they suited me better," she says. Who inspires her style? "Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface, and who could not love Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face and Breakfast at Tiffany's?".

NICK KNIGHT'S Plastic Fantastic shoot, starring LILY COLE, sets out the new look for 2007: "The future looks bright, the future looks crimson, tangerine, ultramarine, acid yellow and amethyst. The future looks as playful and optimistic as all those colours suggest; it looks technically astute in lickable lacquered fabrics, glossy in shiny silks and satins, and sporty in mesh vests and silk-nylon Parkas. The future is fixated on youthfully short hemlines, letting golden limbs stride out in the new staggeringly high heels. The future feels free, with swinging trapeze shapes, soft billowing minis, easy shorts and romantic frilled layers."

MIRANDA SAWYER joins MARIO TESTINO as he shoots NATALIA VODIANOVA as Razorlight's most gorgeous groupie. "It's the ultimate rock 'n' roll fantasy: stadium-filling superband hooks up with leggy, guitar-slinging supermodel for a Vogue fashion jam." It turns out that lead singer Johnny Borrell specifically requested that Vodianova join him on the cover having met her before. "We were in the same café in New York when I was writing the album," he says.

"In my twenties I was obsessed with being cool. I can't believe how much time I spent on presenting an image. It's very base, that" – LUELLA BARTLEY is profiled as one of the world's leading designers, nearly eight years after the Daddy I Want a Pony collection. "It was a bit of an impulse thing," she says of her decision to become a designer. "When you are part of a group like that (Giles Deacon, Katie Grand, Stuart Vevers, Stella McCartney, Phoebe Philo), you feel a bit like the next generation and it's really exciting. We kept thinking, what shall we do."

Quintessentially founder BEN ELLIOT stars as the issue's "international Mr Fixit". "We are constantly being offered a lot of money from people who want to buy us out," he says. "But we are only just beginning." Tributes from friends include those from Harvey Weinstein – "He's charismatic and energetic with a remarkably engaging personality" – Sophie Dahl, who calls him "an absolute angel" and Amy Sacco who simply refers to him as "the best".
