Of the 8 different species of Bears known to exist, the American Black Bear is by far the world's most common. The smallest of the North American bears, it tends to be more shy and prefers to avoid contact with humans. Despite its heavy size and lumbering appearance, it can still out run, out swim, and out climb a human, but is rarely known to attack unless provoked or startled. Hunted since ancient times for their meat and fur, bears have always been a source of fascination and respect. From Greek mythology, which gave us Ursa Major and Minor, to the comforting Teddy, to the more modern and embarrassing Yogi, to the real life cub Winnipeg (who was the inspiration for Winnie the Pooh), or the cub who survived a fire who became the inspiration for Smokey, bear imagery surrounds us everyday, even as we snack on Gummi's. Most of these bears turn out to be Black Bears. (If Yogi was, instead, a Brown Bear, it is more likely that he would have preferred munching on the picnickers themselves as opposed to their baskets.)
