The designation "Sapphire" refers to all gem quality corundum that is not red. Red corundum is called ruby. The other colors are specified by a qualifying adjective: green sapphire, yellow sapphire. The word "sapphire" without qualifier is always reserved for blue sapphire. Colorless sapphire is called leucosaphir or white sapphire. The orange sapphire "padparadscha. There is no precise limit between the two varieties sapphire and ruby. Light red, pink or purple corundums are generally classified as sapphires because they have their own appeal compared to corundums of other colors, whereas they would be considered low quality rubies. The blue color of sapphire is attributed to the presence of iron and titanium, violet to vanadium. Trivalent iron is assigned yellow and green tones, chromium the pink color, vanadium and iron the orange color. But the most sought-after color is a frank cornflower blue. Under artificial light, some sapphires appear inky, even bluish-black.
Heat treatment at 1700-1800°C gives some cloudy, dull sapphires a blue, luminous tint; to some green sapphires, a dark blue color.
The hardness, similar to that of the ruby, also varies according to the directions, which is important for the cut. The fluorescence of sapphires is not characteristic.
Inclusions of oriented rutile needles give the stone a silky shine. In larger quantities, they produce a chatoyance (cat's eye sapphire) or a six-pointed star (star sapphire).
