This ISLE OF MAN coin, dated 2008, is of triangular shape and described as the first "Pyramid" coin.

Struck to commemorate the return of Tutankhamun's treasures for the London Exhibition, "Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs".

 

The reverse design depicts the treasures of the young Pharaoh's tomb, discovered by Howard Carter in the Valley of the Kings in 1922. The obverse design shows the mature portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

 

The coin is struck in bronze and is 56mm in diameter across the base.

 

The coin is in brilliant uncirculated (BU) condition and is housed, Mint sealed, in the coloured display presentation card of issue.

The world’s first Pyramid Coin!

A World First for Isle of Man Treasury Coins and released to coincide with the major exhibition 'Tutankhamun & Golden Age of Pharaohs' at the O2 dome in London.

 

This spectacular coin is the first part of a series which depicts the most wondrous artefacts unearthed in the young pharaoh’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings by English archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922 and reveals the spectacular canopic coffinette of Tutankhamun which contained the boy king’s mummified internal organs.

It is most appropriate that these coins will be issued by the Isle of Man Government since Howard Carter’s great nephew is a well known resident of the island. Furthermore, by drawing a line from each point of the Isle of Man’s Triskelion symbol, the most iconic symbol of Egypt is revealed – the Pyramid!

 

In fact the ancient Celtic triskelion symbol, which consists of three interlocked spirals, is related to the sun, afterlife and reincarnation and here another link to Egypt is revealed. The ancient Egyptians believed that after the sun sets each day, it descends into the netherworld where it travels through the night in preparation to rise again the next morning. They also believed that the death of a person mirrored this night journey which is the reason why Egyptians doctored the process of mummification, in order to protect the deceased through their journey to the afterlife...
