Serpentine is not a mineral species but a family of minerals from the group of silicates subgroup of phyllosilicates (or lamellar silicate). This family contains more than 20 members or polymorphs and is found in metamorphic rocks rich in hydroxides of iron, aluminum, manganese, nickel, zinc, calcium and/or magnesium ((Mg, Fe)3Si2O5(OH)4 ). Given their origin of transmutation as well as because of the many additives brought together during this phenomenon, its members are often difficult to identify because this mineral also crystallizes in microcrystals. The three most important polymorphs of serpentine are antigorine, chrysotile and lizardite. The rock corresponding to the serpentine family is serpentinite.
