Moonstone is an opalescent variety of orthoclase that evokes moonlight. The cause is the reflection of light by the internal structure, formed by lamellae of albite and orthoclase. If the layers are thin enough, they give a nice blue, otherwise the adularescence, white, is less popular. A highlight in a single band can result in a cat's eye moonstone. Large, good quality stones are rare and expensive. Moonstone is quite sensitive to shocks. It comes from Sri Lanka (transparent with blue highlights), Burma (the most beautiful), but also Australia, the United States of America, India (grey, pink, milky white), Madagascar, from Tanzania and even from the Alps.
