Nel corso di un convegno di collezionisti di tenutosi tosi a Lussemburgo nell'autunno del 1975, alcuni dei partecipanti, 

sconcertati dalla crescente incompetenza e malafede prevalente in molti settori del commercio di armi antiche, si 

incontrarono per esaminare la possibilità di erigere  una nuova struttura di scambi, acquisti e vendite che avrebbe 

assicurato all'acquirente garanzie serie sulla giustezza delle  classificazioni storiche-tecniche e sulle rappresentazioni 

di autenticità e di stato di conservazione, mentre allo stesso tempo, avrebbe assicurato al venditore accesso ad 

un'ampia cerchia di eventuali compratori. Fu quindi deciso, in via di un primo passo sperimentale, far stabilire nella 

bella città lacustre di Lugano un centro di raccolta di armi antiche, per lo più di eccellente qualità, provenienti da molti 

colleghi-collezionisti in Svizzera ed all'estero, e di far comporre su di esse un catalogo didascalico di una sorta fino 

ad allora inaudita e tanto meno stampato - un catalogo non nel senso ordinario, commerciale della parola, bensì un 

libro utile e divertente per collezionisti, consistente in schede esaurienti con commentari esplicativi preparate in italiano 

ed inglese da un rispettato studio: materia, con messa in rilievo senza ambiguità di tutti i difetti, non solo dei pregi, 

illustrate con superlativa foto documentazione, arrangiate in ordine cronologico, lumeggiate da materiale iconografico 

tratto da sorgenti antiche, e collocate in una veste grafica che non doveva temere giudizio in qualunque tribunale di 

bibliofili. Tale opera doveva prestare duplice servizio: all'inizio, da catalogo di un'asta destinata a svolgersi a Zurigo 

il 26 aprile 1976, ed in seguito da un libro d'arte e di storia, senz'altro uno dei tre più eleganti, informativi e razionali 

su armi da fuoco antiche comparsi in lingua italiana dai grandi cataloghi dell'800, nonché, ci compiace credere, uno 

dei sei o sette più allettanti in inglese.

A questo proposito, i proprietari scelsero la Acquafresca Editrice S.A. di Lugano, la quale in turno chiese a Robert 

Held, redattore di The Arms and Armor Annual (v. pag. 158) ed autore di The Age of Firearms, etc., di assumere gli 

incarichi di autore bilingue e direttore del progetto. Ora lanciamo questo nostro opuscolo con la speranza di ricevere 

presto notizie da molte terre che la struttura finora creata abbia riscontrato l'approvazione della fratellanza 

collezionistica internazionale, a che sarà saldamente stabilita quale impresa utile per coloro che ne condivideranno 

i molti benefici interdipendenti.

In the course of an arms collectors' meeting held in Luxembourg in the Fall of 1975, several of those present, 

perturbed by the growing incompetence and malfeasance encountered in many sectors of the antique arms and 

armour trade, met to esamine the possibilities of setting up a new structure for trading, buying and selling that would 

give the buyer valid guarantees on the correctness of arms-historical identification and on the claims made for 

authenticity and condition, while at the same time assuring the seller of access to a wide circle of potential buyers.

It was therefore decided, by way of a first experimental step, to set up in the fair lake-city of Lugano in Switzerland 

a receiving and storeage centre for antique arms, for the most part of excellent quality, contributed by many fellow-

collectors in Switzerland and elsewhere, and to work up around these a didactic catalogue of a sort never yet heard 

of, let alone printed—a catalogue not in the ordinary, commercial sense of the word, but a useful and entertaining 

book for collectors consisting of exhaustive descriptions and ex plicative commentaries drawn up in English and 

Italian by a respected arms historian, with unambiguous reporting of all defects no less than of all virtues, illustrated 

by a superb photo coverage, arranged in chronological order, highlighted by illustrations drawn from antique sources, 

and dressed in vestments of design and graphics that needn't fear judgment in any court of bibliophiles. Such a 

work would have to do double duty: at the beginning, as a catalogue of an auction planned to be held in Zurich on 

26 April 1976, and there after as an art and history book, surely one of the three most elegant, instructive and 

rational on antique firearms to appear in Italian since the great nineteenth-century collection catalogues, and, we 

like to think, perhaps also one of the six or seven most appealing in English.

To achieve these ends, the weapons' owners chose Acquafresca Editrice S.A. of Lugano, who in turn asked Robert 

Held, editor of The Arms and Armor Annual (see p. 158) and author of The Age of Firearms, etc., to take on the tasks 

of bilingual authorship and project supervision. Now we launch the result with the hope of soon receiving word from 

many quarters that the structure thus far created has met the approval of the international collecting fraternity, and 

that it will become established as a venture advantageous for all those who will share in its many interlocking benefits.
