Designed in an era when it was believed that there was little that could be done to stop shaped charge explosives, the Leopard 1 was designed with a focus on mobility and firepower. Its armor could withstand direct hits from quick-firing 20mm cannons, but its main defense was in speed. Armament consisted of a 105mm rifled main gun and twin 7.62mm machine guns. Extensive upgrades throughout the production run lead to many variants with improved abilities.
