Offering
an Antique Aesthetic Movement Transferware Platter by (B G &W) Bates,
Gildea & Walker “Satsuma” c.1879. This rare platter has a striking medallion in the center of
birds on a cherry blossom branch, and the trim has various blocks of bamboo and
geometric patterns popular with this transferware. The colors are vibrant blues, blacks and
grays.
The platter has the distinctive creamy beige crackled glaze that
is famous in Satsuma pottery. It does
however have two chips on its underside and a small chip in the paint, all on
the bottom, not uncommon with the age of the piece, please see photos.
Underside is back stamped with the Bird and Diamond Registry that Bates,
Gildea & Walker used from 1878 – 1882; English Registry dates the platter circa 1879
The platter measures 21” long x 16 ½” wide
