IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM (OS) BEFORE UPGRADING
One thing that you should be aware before upgrading is what operating system (OS) your machine currently has installed. The majority of older operating systems are 32 Bit, like XP, Vista and Windows 7(32Bit & 64 Bit). Why is it important you ask?
Well a 32 Bit OS will only see and utilize and use 3GB/3.25 of Ram even if you have 4GB or more installed. This is just the way OS's were written. So dont waste any extra money buying something you wont use. The way to check this is via "My Computer" then "System Properties/System Information"
My honest advice if your running a 32 Bit OS would be to install a maximum of 3GB Ram, Ram Modules run in Pairs, in order for your Ram to run at the rated speed it must be installed in a pair.
Its important to use both, if you use just one slot your ram will run at half the rated speed.
SHOULD I UPGRADE MY OPERATING SYSTEM???
You can not upgrade from 32Bit to 64Bit. In order to go from 32Bit OS to a 64Bit OS, you would have completely wipe your existing OS and reinstall it again. This means you would loose all your existing Data. If however you are doing a complete system wipe we recommend you install 64Bit operating system rather then a 32Bit one.
To run the maximum amount of Ram which 8GB (OptiPlex 380) and 16GB (OptiPlex 780) respectively.
Personally I would save all my important documents and photos and reinstall a 64Bit OS, This would allow you to install much more Ram in both instances.
If you currently have a 64Bit Operating System there is no need to reinstall.
