Each photo measures 5" by 7" with a white border on all sides with the signature handsigned on the specially elongated bottom margin.
The photograph is from the 1939-1945 period and has been reproduced and then signed by Oberleutnant zur See Hans-Georg Hess Knights Cross. The photo is accompanied by a brief career history.
This signed photo forms part of a limited edition of U-boat Commanders signed Photograph Series many of whom were awarded the Knight's Cross for their actions. This is number 5 in the series of 10 Photographs so far issued, produced by ourselves. Each photograph has been handsigned and they are all numbered and certified on the reverse. Each photograph is a limited edition of 150.

Hans Georg Hess joined the Kriegsmarine at the age of 16 in April 1940 as a volunteer. He spent two years on various minesweepers before transferring to the U-boat force in April 1942.  He made five patrols on U-466, which was commanded by Kptlt. Gerhard Thäter, mostly in the North Atlantic. During her fifth patrol the boat managed to break through into the Mediterranean, although some members of the crew were wounded from an attack by B24 USAAF aircraft.  In September 1944 Hess took over U-995 and made five patrols in the Arctic Sea. The boat surrendered on 8 May 1945 in Trondheim. Hans Georg Hess then spent a year in Norwegian captivity.  He later became a lawyer in Hannover.

Flottille (training); 1 Jun 1944 - 28 Feb 1945 13 Flottille (front boat); 1 Mar 1945 - 8 May 1945 14 Flottille (front boat). U-995 was stricken at Trondheim, Norway on 8 May 1945. Surrendered to Britain and then transferred to Norway in Oct 1948.  Became the Norwegian submarine Kaura on 6 Dec 1952.  In 1965 retired from service returned to Germany where she became a museum ship in Oct 1971
