Manufacturer Description

The Garmin GPS 18x is a high-sensitivity GPS sensor targeted to OEM clients for use in automotive, fleet vehicle, and electronics applications where a small, highly accurate GPS receiver is needed.

The Garmin GPS 18x is high-sensitivity, WAAS-enabled GPS receiver and is available in either asynchronous serial or USB 2.0 versions, and comes with an integrated magnetic base. The puck-like receiver is 2.4 inches in diameter and weighs just 3.5 ounces, making it an ideal solution in applications where space is at a premium.

The GPS 18 is offered in three different cable configurations: A-style USB, DB-9 pin serial with 12-volt cigarette lighter adapter (PC), or bare wire (LVC).

The PC and LVC versions both default to output data in the industry standard NMEA 0183 data format, but may also be user programmed to output data in the GARMIN proprietary format. The USB version produces data ONLY in the GARMIN proprietary format. This means that the OEM 18 USB can only function with the Garmin mapping software on a computer.

The GPS 18 comes complete with non-volatile memory for storage of configuration information, a real-time clock, and raw measurement output data for sophisticated customer applications. The LVC version additionally provides a pulse-per-second logic level output whose rising edge is aligned to the UTC second within 1 microsecond. The USB 2.0 full-speed version of the GPS18 is also compatible with USB 1.1 full-speed hosts.

Very Important Note:

The OEM 18 GPS Series all require different input voltages (see list below):
• 18 USB: 4.4 - 5.5 Vdc
• 18 PC: 8 - 30* Vdc (Automotive supply from cigarette lighter jack)
• 18 LVC: 4.0 - 5.5 Vdc
* It should be noted that the OEM 18 PC unit has a cigarette lighter adapter end that converts the 12V DC (from the cigarette lighter power source) to the input voltage required by the GPS unit. If you remove the cigarette lighter end and then hard wire the GPS to the 12V power source, you WILL burn out the unit.

For use on your PC you will need mobile PC or enRoute with a copy of compatible garmin mapping such as City Navigator North America NT. Please note that the software needs to be unlock to the GPS unit before it will work.

USB Drivers for Non-Garmin Software: To use the Garmin GPS 18 with Non Garmin Mapping Software (Third Party), you require the Garmin Spanner USB driver.
