JIG BASE

The jig base is made from hardwood (Ash). This construction allows it to be firmly clamped in a bench vice without damage to the jig or the side guides. Threaded steel inserts are precisely positioned along each side for attachment of the guides. The hole positions are standardised and allow interchangeability of different scales. The base is finely sanded and waxed for protection against dryness and use. There is a rubber grip covering on the top face for supporting the fretboard and there are four rubber feet on the underside.

JIG DIMENSIONS

Jig Dimensions: 525mm long x 70mm wide.

The jig accommodates guitar scales up to 27.5".

ADDITIONAL SCALES

The jig can be supplied with additional scale sizes. For further information and to confirm availability, please contact us if you would like additional scales to be included with the jig.

DESCRIPTION OF USE:

MARKING THE SLOT POSITIONS

The optimum mounting for stability and comfortable working is to clamp the jig in a vice.

FRET POSITION MARKERS / TEMPLATES

The Fret Position Markers ensure the precise position and relationship of each fret slot. This is achieved with a few return strokes of the fretsaw at each position. As the photo below demonstrates the marker position for each fret slot is at the exact surface plane of the fretboard whereby it ensures maximum positional accuracy.

The board should be a snug fit between the side guides to prevent any lateral movement. If the board is narrower than the jig then temporary packers should be fitted to restrict any side to side movement.

REMOVE THE FRET POSITION MARKERS

Remove the fret position markers from the cutting position after qualifying the slot positions.

CUT AN INITIAL / DATUM SLOT TO DEPTH

After removing the fret position markers, cut an initial slot to depth at a central position along the fretboard.

Fit the slot locator to this initial slot.

CUTTING THE REMAINING SLOTS TO DEPTH

Cut the remaining slots to depth.

The side guides relocate the saw to each position and prevent accidental damage to the fretboard through saw misplacement and slippage.

"I love the slot locator as I can remove the fingerboard and place it accurately straight back in the jig".  Steve L. , Bristol, UK.

NUT SLOT WIDTH

The jig can also be used to cut the nut slot sides.

After cutting the fret slots, reposition the fingerboard so that the saw blade cuts the opposite side of the desired nut slot. (The board should be clamped in its temporary position). As shown below, the jig will ensure the slot sides are parallel.

The material can then be carefully removed by working from each side of the board towards the centre.

(The jig base - with the guides removed, provides an ideal set up on which to clamp the board and perform this).

LOW PROFILE FRETSAW

The saw has a comfortable genuine vintage (unused as new) hardwood handle with ferrule. The body is also designed to be used as an aid to controlling the depth of the fret slot (see photo further below).

Kerf Width 0.6mm. Cutting Depth 2.5mm. The blade can be orientated for either push sawing or pull sawing.

DEPTH OF SAW CUT

The depth of cut is fixed and maximum depth is controlled by the bottom of the saw which makes contact with the fretboard. The contact face of the saw is crowned. The saw itself is no wider than a fret so any marking of the wood is minimal and hidden beneath the fret when fitted. The saw supplied with the jig has a maximum cutting depth of 2.5mm.

ALTERNATIVE SAW DEPTH

Alternative saw depths are available. A 2.0mm depth saw can be supplied and is a suitable alternative where a flatter board is being cut.
