Pink Rhodolite GARNET. IF-VVS1 (sold individually) Africa
N / A

The + of this product

Garnet designates a family of minerals of the group of nesosilicates crystallizing in the cubic crystalline system. Gem-quality garnets are fine stones.
Used alone, the term garnet is synonymous with pyrope-almandine.
A rock formed almost exclusively of garnet is called a garnetite.
Properties
Garnets are formed from three silicate groups associated with metal cations, of general formula X32+Y23+[SiO4]3, where X and Y are ions charged with 2 and 3 positive charges respectively.
The structure consists of a three-dimensional network of octahedra and tetrahedra which share vertices: in the space between these polyhedra there are cavities in the form of a triangular dodecahedron, in which the divalent cations with coordination 8 are placed. These cavities can be described as tetragonal antiprisms deformed in such a way that the vertices are no longer coplanar.
According to the presence or absence of calcium, two groups of garnets are distinguished:
calcic garnets or ougrandites (OUvarovite GRossulaire ANDradite);
aluminous garnets, or pyralspites (PYRope ALmandin SPessartite).
The Ti intervenes up to 1% in the almandine and 5% in the melanites, black varieties of andradite (one can even reach 20% of Ti). Yttrium can occur in other garnets such as spessartines which can contain up to 5% Y2O3 or Zn.
The hardness of garnets (7-7.5) sometimes makes them used in industry as abrasives (especially denser pyropes because they are formed under high pressure) but the harder corundum (9) is preferred.
Garnets are also studied by geologists as a geothermobarometer. They make it possible to determine the temperature and/or the pressure of formation of a rock. Geologists use this property to determine if a rock has undergone favorable pressure and temperature conditions to contain diamonds or oil.
Synthetic garnets are obtained at 500oC and 500 bars of water pressure, the pressurized water allowing the formation temperature to be reduced.
Jewelry
Garnets are used in jewelry to make various jewelry.
