The original ark is an ornate gold plated wooden chest from Biblical times that held the two engraved tablets of law or the ten commandments.  
The ark has a number of magical powers according to the Hebrew Bible which tells stories of its power.
It vanished in 587bc and there are many stories as to its wherabouts, none of which are proven.
