Antique French Enameled Liqueur Liquor Service Set Decanter Cordials (#34-1)

Description

Our research indicates that this estate set is an early French enameled glass liqueur service. It includes the stoppered decanter or carafe, six tiny cordials or cups and a matching round glass tray. Finding complete sets such as this one in the United States is not common. Most likely made in the Napoleon III (Louis Napoleon Bonaparte) era when he was Emperor of France from 1852 to 1870.  We feel this set was made around 1860. The decanter and cordials are all mouth blown in a wonderful green colored glass that has been hand enameled in a floral motif.

The decanter is rather melon shaped and has an optic panel appearance. It has an angular rather than a curved applied handle and a flat rather than a wavy top. It is decorated in what looks to be pansies and other smaller flowers and foliage. The detail is impressive! There are also gilt highlights and embellishments. The ball-shaped stopper fits snuggly and has some faded gilt remaining on top of it.
The six tiny cordials have similar enameled decorations that match the decanter. Each has an applied loop handle. They are also in an optic pattern with eight interior facets. The polished rims have worn gilt. The round glass tray has a shallow concave smooth pontil in the center.

Dimension/size – The decanter stands right at 6 ¾” tall and with the stopper in place stands about 9”. The body of the decanter is just under 3 ½” wide. The base is 2 5/8” in diameter. The petite cordials are slightly less than 1 ¾” tall and are just under 1 ½” across at the opening. The tray is 9 ½” in diameter and has about a 1” lip. The set weigh about two pounds six ounces.

Condition – This set is very good condition considering its age. There is a noticeable chip near the spout on the decanter. It seems somewhat smooth so the damage may be quite old. There is some surface wear on the decanter and one small black imbedded speck in the glass. The decanter needs to be cleaned as there is some residue in the bottom. One of the cordials has a few tiny flea bites on the rim that are hard to detect but the remaining cordials are in excellent condition. The tray has some surface scratches on the bottom as would be expected. The enamel is in excellent condition. There is some fading to the gilt throughout. Overall no serious issues to report. Please see photos.
