This magnificent iron cross is crafted of solid sterling silver, featuring narrow arms at the base, curving outward to a broader perimeter. The iron cross, or "cross pattee" first appears in medieval art; a 7th century example of which is the treasure binding given to Monza Cathedral by Queen Theodelinda (circa 600's). The Knight's Templar began using this design (red in color, on white robes) during the Crusades, as did the Teutonic Knights (plain black cross on white). Prussia and Germany have used the iron cross as a decoration for military valor from the 19th century until the 1940s. There are many historical references and uses of this classic design, but I can't go into all of them here. Needless to say, this is a sharp looking piece of jewelry sure to elicit compliments, if not conversation.
