Description

 Exclusively from the Fashion Archaeologist

Another rare treasure in our line of 'Edwardian Rose' antique patterns, this is pattern #1911-A-040, for an elegant, easy-to-sew dressy Edwardian shawl-jacket or mantelet, developed from an authentic French design of 1911.   This garment will fit most sizes without any alterations (see size details below).   See all photos by scrolling down in the listing description!

Please note that this listing is for a sewing pattern only, not the finished shawl-jacket or other items used for display in the photos. However, the patterns for the Skirt (#1911-A-023) and Blouse (#1911-A-015) shown in the photos are available in our store.

Details:  This is a dressy but very easy to wear shawl-jacket that is cut in one piece and lined, but seamed in such as way that it drapes over the shoulders and falls into graceful points at front and back, finished with decorative tassels.  The jacket can be made from a plain, solid-coloured fabric or ornamented with soutache or passementerie as desired.  Lace yardage lined in a soft pastel coloured silk satin would make a version appropriate for evening wear (our photos show both solid woven fabric and lace versions of this jacket).

The jacket takes just under 2 metres (about 2-1/4 yards) of main fabric 109-152cm (43" to 60") wide,
and the same of lining.

This elegant garment could be worn over practically any Edwardian blouse and skirt, although we think it works especially well as a dressy walking suit with our fancy silk blouse (#1911-A-015), and tailored skirt (#1911-A-023) as shown in the photos.  The photos also show the various ways in which the shawl-jacket can be worn -- open to display the lining, closed at front with a "frog" closure, or draped like a shawl over the shoulders.

SIZE: One size fits most -- as this shawl-jacket is intended to drape loosely over the shoulders and be left open at front if desired (as shown in the photos), it will fit a wide range of sizes, from about Bust 32" to 48". Further alterations are possible if needed, and are explained in the instructions.

RECOMMENDED SEWING SKILL LEVEL (2/5): Solid Beginner. There is some care and patience required in sewing the jacket fabric to the lining, and some hand finishing involved, but the step-by-step sewing instructions will guide you through the process. However, you should have enough sewing experience to be familiar with common sewing terms and basic techniques.

This is a great introduction to historical sewing for someone who has not tried an antique pattern before, and a very easy project for anyone with intermediate or better sewing skills.

Recommended Fabrics:  Softly draping but fairly substantial silks (like medium-weight silk satins/charmeuses or twills), lightweight wool gabardine, crepe or challis, preferably in solid colours.  Lace is also recommended, and will look beautiful with a contrasting pastel lining. Velvet is suitable, but will be more difficult to work with.  Stiff, crisp or thick fabrics like taffeta, dupioni, brocades, and most linens and cottons, are not suitable, nor are diagonal weaves or prints.   The fabric must "flow" in order to properly drape in this garment.

The pictures show this shawl-jacket made up in a lightweight silk/wool challis with a rose-beige charmeuse lining. The jacket requires a lining for proper finishing, and pure silk satin or charmeuse is recommended, although rayon Bemberg can be used.  Polyester satin or charmeuse can be used, but may make it more difficult to achieve a smooth drape and neat edges to the garment.

Our 'Edwardian Rose' Patterns:  Like all our patterns, this one is professionally printed on sturdy 20lb paper.  It includes detailed cutting and sewing instructions in English, with measurements in inches and centimetres, a suggested fabric and notions list, as well as a copy of the antique fashion sketch.  The pattern comes in handy resealable plastic envelope.
We take these patterns from the "bare bones" original antique patterns (usually from French sources), re-draw, correct, and clarify the outlines, assemble the pattern piece(s) onto one sheet, add helpful markings and notations, then write complete, step-by-step English instructions.

If you have ever tried to sew from an original antique pattern, you'll know they can be a challenge at best and mystifying at worst, with few (if any) sewing instructions.  We've taken the hard work out of interpreting these fashions to make them accessible for modern sewing.

An elegant and authentic Titanic-era shawl-jacket!
