80 grade (coarse) Silicon Carbide grit is an abrasive usually used at the first stage of a standard rock / stone tumbling cycle and works equally well with rotary or vibratory tumbling machines. 

Following the use of this 80 grade grit at the first stage, 220 grade (medium) grit is usually used at the second stage to further smooth the rocks / stones and 400 grade (fine) grit at the third stage. The fourth and final stage is to polish the stones using cerium or zinc oxide.

Though commonly used as an abrasive in tumbling and other lapidary work, Silicon Carbide grit also has other uses and applications in grinding, finishing and lapping for industrial and engineering processes.
