NATIVE ORCHIDS OF FLORIDA, CARLYLE LUER, 1972, 1ST, W/DJ, NY BOTANICAL GARDEN, NEAR FINE CONDITION.  For your consideration, I am pleased to offer a very nice copy of a very scarce and valuable book, titled:  “The Native Orchids of Florida” by Carlyle A. Luer who did all the writing, photography and drawings in this book.  The book was published by the New York Botanical Garden, printed in England, dated 1972 and is a First Edition (so stated).  This very large book is bound in olive oxford cloth hard covers with gilt titles on the spine; it measures 9 ¼ x 12 ¼ inches and contains 295 pages.  The book is protected by a heavy duty, pictorial dust jacket.

Contents:  This book opens with an explanatory Foreword by William Campbell Steere of the New York Botanical Garden underscoring the scholarship of this work which prompted them to sponsor it.  Thereafter, there is a Preface by the Author and then a short, two part Introduction, the first part touching on Florida and its habitat for orchids and the second part on identification and morphology of orchids.  From page 35, the major part of the book, the Description of Orchids begins, with each genus described as a separate chapter.  In addition to these descriptions, there are two “notes” embedded among the descriptions, one on “Orchids which lack Chlorophyl” and the second on “Mimicry in Orchids”.  The final sections of the book include a short note on “New Combinations”, a Glossary with a separate note on the Fibonacci Sequence, and finally an Index.  I am also pleased to tell you that this book is lavishly illustrated with many in text drawings and also with 84 full color plates, typically one for each genus described and with several photos of different examples.

Condition:  This book is in near fine condition.  The dust jacket has some minor wrinkles along the edges, in particular the top edge but these do not amount to much, with no chips or tears.  The back cover of the dust jacket has some light soiling and in general, the paper of the jacket on the inside is darkened.  The dust jacket has been price-clipped.  The hard covers are pristine, clean and fine with bright titles on the spine and no bumping or edge wear.  Inside, the book is unmarked and unblemished throughout and the pages and plates clean and bright.  The binding is rock solid, tight and firm.  This book is not ex-library or a remainder.

Shipping:  This book will be very carefully packed, with bubble wrap and solid cardboard protection and promptly mailed upon payment.  Please note that I do not charge for packing and handling; all you pay is the postage and sometimes not all of that, as in this case!  Media mail postage for this large-sized book will still be only $5.50.  International and Canadian bidders should be aware that this heavy book will doubtless exceed the four pound weight limit for international first class mail and therefore will ship outside the US only with a US Postal Service International Priority Medium Flat Rate Box.  Combined shipping for multiple purchases is gladly offered.  You will pay full price for the shipping of the first book and half price for any others purchased that same week.  For example, two books with shipping at $4 each will ship for $6 combined.

Please see my other books on offer, including for the next few weeks, a large and mixed collection of “art books”– quite a mixed bag but hopefully appealing to some of you.

Please don’t hesitate to send in any questions; I will monitor closely and respond promptly.  Thanks and enjoy.
