Appendix to an Account of Louisiana : being an
abstract of documents in the offices of the departments of State, and of
the Treasury.
Jefferson, Thomas. Sibley, John. Philadelphia : Printed by T. & G. Palmer, for J. Conrad [and four others-Norfolk,Philadelphia], 1803.
A rare issue of the scarcest portion of one of the most important documents of the
post-Louisiana Purchase period, simultaneously published in Washington, Baltimore and Norfolk the same
year. Based on
material assembled by Thomas Jefferson, this publication had many versions hastily assembled by John Sibley under the President's directive, and was an appendix to the Account of Louisiana, which provided basic
knowledge of Louisiana to a country hungry to hear about it. This was also issued separately (as was probably the case here) but
sometimes accompanies the main text. Evidently this APPENDIX. was not
available to the printer, who added a note at the end of the text saying
that he is unable to obtain a copy and does not even know if it has
been printed, making this truly a scarcity. This portions lacks the title and first leaf, beginning at (iii), and ending at (lxxxiii), lacking the final 4 leaves at the end, however retaining nearly all of the important text and information, including executions, jails, laws, governing, punishments, directives for slave policing, sales and rights of free people of color. Thread-bound, uncut page edges, as issued, with some rounding. One leaf from an older work (18th century American, about the Rev War, Indians, and travels in North America-very interesting) found within it, as shown in pics. . Measures 9" x 6". Good luck!
